1 year full-time (September start only)

Business and Law
Law and NBS Building, City Campus East

Northumbria Law School, in partnership with Newcastle Business School, is proud to announce the launch of the new MSc Business with Legal Management programme

This programme has been developed to meet the needs of recent law graduates and their potential employers. Employers of law graduates are currently seeking candidates who can differentiate themselves by demonstrating that they have business skills in addition to core legal skills. Successful law firms and successful lawyers need to be commercial, entrepreneurial and business-minded and law graduates who demonstrate those skills are at a premium in the legal recruitment market. These skills are required in firms of all sizes and sectors of the profession.

The programme seeks to add a business dimension to law graduates' undergraduate specialism. It seeks to enhance their employability in the legal sector by providing the business skills and acumen sought by law firms and legal departments, in addition to core legal skills. The course also focuses on management issues specifically affecting such legal organisations.

The course is ideal for law, GDL or LPC graduates seeking a training contract. It is also suitable for qualified lawyers seeking to enhance their CV with a view to securing a legal or non-legal position.

The programme provides law graduates with both a general postgraduate business education and an opportunity to semispecialise in relation to management in the context of a law firm or legal department.

Students will study modules which cover a variety of business functions such as marketing, strategic management, strategic awareness, developing leadership potential and understanding the theory and practice of business, both national and international. Students will also study business and management issues arising in the specific context of a law firm or legal department and current key issues in legal management across a range of practice areas.

Highlights

  • It is possible to extend the course by six months by doing a work placement in a business organisation (subject to placement availability).
  • After three years relevant work experience, students can join a distance learning programme to convert the MSc into an MBA, which involves completion of a continuing professional development portfolio.
  • Teaching by senior solicitors in private practice.
