Housing Policy and Management MA
COURSE INFORMATION (2013 ENTRY)
1 year full-timeEngineering and Environment
Ellison Building, Newcastle City Campus
This programme is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in housing. It aims to equip students to meet the challenge of leading housing organisations to success.
The programme is informed by current research and practice with a special focus on sustainability. Staff teaching on the programme are mainly housing specialists with close connections to practice.
Successful completion of the taught modules leads to a Postgraduate Diploma. In addition, successful completion of a dissertation will result in the award of MA.
This programme is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) which describes Northumbria University as a 'centre of excellence'. The programme has been designed to meet the full academic requirements for membership of the CIH. When students who have successfully completed the postgraduate diploma have sufficient professional practice experience they need only subsequently undertake the CIH's professional practice element (APEX) for full membership (which confers the designation MCIH).
The School of the Built Environment has entered into a Partnership with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) to promote excellence in teaching and the surveying profession. This means that students graduating with the MA and in employment will be eligible to begin the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence.
This is an excellent time to consider a career in housing. A skills shortage has been identified in the sector and the need for affordable housing is recognised across the political spectrum.
FUNDINGFor full-time students the programme is recognised as providing professional training, and mature students may be eligible for Career Development Loans.
Students on this full-time course study at the University for two semesters and then those who elect to take the MA are offered advice and supervision for their dissertation over the summer months.
