Programme Aims

• To develop Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (SCPHN) who are fit for practice, purpose, award and professional standing within the third part of the NMC register (2004).
• To develop SCPHNs with the knowledge and skills base to develop public health practice with individuals, groups, and communities. It focuses on disadvantaged groups, vulnerable populations and the various dimensions of health inequalities, locally, regionally, and nationally. The learning will take place in a variety of settings including homes, schools, work places, local community areas, voluntary and public establishments.

Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate effective, collaborative and participative inter-personal relationships with users, carers and agencies;
• Critically analyse, assess, plan, monitor and evaluate the public health needs, activities and programmes in partnership with specific individuals and groups within the context of a complex and rapidly changing agenda of health and social care provision;
• Promote effective inter-professional, evidence based public health practice, analysing, critiquing and using research and other forms of evidence in practice, disseminating research findings and adapting practice where necessary;
• Assess risk in complex situations;
• Work with frameworks and protocols whilst simultaneously developing and using flexible and innovative approaches to practice within the context of national and local policies;
• Deal with conflicting priorities and ambiguous situations;
• Work with competing and contested concepts in practice;
• Continue professional development maintaining and developing practice, through the development of lifelong learning skills that compliment, wherever possible, service development needs.

 

Programme Delivery

BSc (Hons) Public Health Practice is offered full time (over one year) and part time (over two years) for registered first level nurses interested in community public health practice (health visiting, school nursing). The programme meets the NMC Standards of Proficiency for the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Award. This programme aims to equip future public health nurses with the knowledge and skill base to develop public health practice with individuals, groups and communities. This programme is of 52 weeks duration and consists of 50% theory and 50% practice to facilitate the integration of theory and practice.

Placement

The placement will be within the locality of the employing Trust and where possible students are placed as near as possible to their place of residence. However, the availability of practice mentors may mean the student will need to travel and applicants should be aware that they may be placed anywhere within the sponsoring Trust.
