The National General Certificate is the most widely held health and safety qualification in the UK with over 100,000 people having gained the award since it was launched in 1989.

The qualification is ideal for managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. The certificate helps them manage risks effectively. Many people take the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a first step in a career in health and safety. It provides a valuable overview, and is a sound basis for further professional study, for example the NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health, which is also offered by Northumbria University.

Enhanced career prospects
These and nationally and internationally recognised qualifications demonstrate to employers that holders possess the core professional knowledge and competence in health and safety. Holders can expect enhanced career prospects and a range of new opportunities.

Part-time route
For many, the traditional part-time route of evening classes is ideal. You'll get regular tuition from experienced health and safety practitioners and you'll be in an ideal environment to discuss H&S problems with fellow delegates and tutors.

The part-time route is delivered on Wednesday evenings between 6.00 and 9.00p.m. and consists of presentations, tours, practical demonstrations, videos, slide shows, discussions, group work and exercises. Students are provided with a copy of the course text (RRC course notes), and have access to our elearning site which contains a wealth of course material and example exam questions. You'll also be given a library card and access to the University IT system, including resources such as electronic journals, databases, software and standards).

Courses are available to run from September to March and April to December each year.

The NEBOSH National General Certificate covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge. The syllabus is mapped to the National Occupational Standards for Health and Safety owned by ENTO. No previous health and safety knowledge is required but candidates should note the assessment includes a requirement to write a short report.

CAREERS

Holders of the NEBOSH Certificate can expect exciting new career and promotion opportunities. Many larger organisations choose the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a key part of their supervisors' or management development programme. Smaller organisations, operating in lower risk environments, often choose the NEBOSH National General certificate as the appropriate qualification for the manager taking the lead on health and safety issues.
