The LLB (Hons) part-time programme is a flexible 4-6 year degree programme. The degree is taught on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, between 6pm and 9pm and 6pm and 8.30pm respectively, in the Law School, which is located on our award-winning development, City Campus East.

The programme provides a Qualifying Law Degree which means that it exempts students from the academic stage of legal education to become a solicitor or barrister. Once the degree is completed students may apply for admission to the Legal Practice Course (LPC), the vocational stage of legal education to become a solicitor, or the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC), the vocational stage of legal education to become a barrister. Students will also find that obtaining a law degree opens up a wide range of other career opportunities.

The course is designed to give students an understanding of the operation of the English legal system, the diverse areas of law contained within that system and the methods employed by lawyers in using legal source materials. Throughout the course emphasis is placed on student-centred learning to foster research skills and initiative.

LEARNING AND TEACHING METHODS

You will be taught in tutor-led lectures and small group seminars which are based upon questions prepared by students to encourage a deeper learning. In years 1 and 2 you will have weekly study skills sessions concentrating on legal, research and writing skills as well as your examination technique and use of IT.  You are expected to engage in independent learning throughout the course to supplement your class-based learning with more in-depth research.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

You will be assessed by coursework or written examinations, and oral presentation in some modules.

The assessments are carefully designed to ensure your knowledge, understanding, accuracy, coherence, structure, application, analysis and critical engagement with the law as well as your clear use of English and appropriate referencing of all of the sources used.

ACCREDITATION

The LLB (Hons) Part Time programme is a Qualifying Law Degree.

CAREERS

Graduates are eligible to complete law professional training via the Legal Practice Course or the Bar Professional Training Course.  The knowledge and skills gained across this degree programme are beneficial for careers in a number of areas including tax and accountancy, civil service, human resources, managerial roles and politics.
