Engineering and Environment
Ellison Building, Newcastle City Campus

Quantity Surveyors are construction consultants who advise on cost and legal matters. As such they are often called the accountants and lawyers of the construction industry.

Excellent world wide employment opportunities are available in private practice, with building contractors and specialist sub contractors, local authorities, civil engineering, accountants and management consultants. Work can vary from small refurbishment schemes to multi-million pound prestigious projects.

This is a vocational degree providing a broad education combined with the specialist study required for a career as a chartered quantity surveyor. In Stage One, studies concentrate on the principles of knowledge on which quantity surveying is based; law, economics, management, and construction technology. An overview of the construction industry and the parties involved is also provided together with information and communication technology.

In Stage Two, the programme concentrates on the traditional role of the quantity surveyor and integrates work-based learning. Studies concentrate on design cost control, tender documentation, construction management and contractor payments. Again, IT is a major theme, which runs throughout the programme.

In the final stage, the broader developing role of the quantity surveyor is investigated while further developing academic skills including critical analysis, research and creative problem-solving.

There is a block release week in each year of the programme which includes a field study visit to UK or European locations.
