From September 2008 Northumbria University working in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency Academy (HCA Academy) will be delivering the first Foundation Degree in Sustainable Communities in the North East. This exciting programme of study is an innovative collaboration between the School of the Built Environment and the School of Arts and Social Sciences and HCA. The programme aims to develop skills and knowledge in all aspects of Sustainable Communities ranging from design, planning, professional practice, and housing right through to issues associated with governance, sustainability, community safety, social inclusion and researching communities. During the course, students will undertake an in-depth supervised work-based project on an area of interest.

COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT
The Foundation Degree is a three year, part-time, programme of study which is delivered by block teaching on Friday and Saturday once a month. Teaching
and learning involves a mix of traditional lectures, discussion groups, examination of case study material,
directed learning, site visits and guest presentations.
There are no formal examinations for this course. Assessments will involve a range of written assignments
and presentations that require students to produce reports and strategies to a standard and style expected in a work place.
ACCREDITATION
This course is accredited by the the Chartered Institute of Housing and successful completion entitles students to apply for Corporate Membership of the CIH.
CAREERS
The Foundation Degree in Sustainable Communities provides an excellent opportunity for students to develop their skills and knowledge in a rapidly developing professional area, and to relate to other students working within a wide range of related subject areas. Upon completion of the course, students will have the option of leaving with a Foundation Degree or moving onto the final year of a full degree programme e.g. BA (Hons) Housing Sustainable Communities.
