COURSE INFORMATION (2013 ENTRY)
3 years full-time or 4 years sandwich
Business and LawLaw and NBS Building, City Campus East
The BA (Hons) in Accounting has been designed to provide a cutting-edge educational experience attractive to those wishing to pursue a career in accountancy or related areas. This long-running programme has established links with the major accounting professional bodies, and our programme is therefore closely mapped to the issues that are relevant to the profession.
Upon completing this programme, students gain a number of exemptions from professional examinations which are hugely beneficial when seeking professionally qualified status. The aim of the programme (which was reviewed and revalidated in 2012 to ensure it is up to date with current accounting issues) is to enable you to effectively acquire the knowledge and expertise necessary to enter the profession, whilst also making you aware of the ethical issues impacting on modern business. It also helps you to develop interpersonal skills such as communication, team work and problem solving that are particularly attractive to employers within the accounting profession.
Placement Year
There is an opportunity to undertake a yearlong paid placement at the end of Year 2. You will get full support from the Placements Office to obtain a placement which prepares you for final year studies and future employment.
LEARNING AND TEACHING METHODS
The programme will be delivered using a combination of lectures, seminars, computer-based workshops, visiting speakers, open learning materials and directed learning. To ensure students are aware of how their programme relates to professional practice, some sessions will be delivered by qualified accountants from a range of local organisations.
The programme will involve both directed and independent learning. Directed learning will include wider reading, preparation for seminar activity, developing presentations etc. Independent learning includes a range of tasks that the student identifies as a result of their studies, such as wider reading, reflection of their performance and research into marketing issues through general and specialist media.
ASSESSMENT METHODS
You will be assessed in a variety of ways including the production of business reports, computerised business simulations, presentations, portfolios and examinations. Many assessments are based on real-life case studies and scenarios, providing an authentic and relevant representation of how businesses work.
As students of this programme have significant professional exemptions which support the achievement of chartered accountant status, many specialist modules have examinations to comply with their professional requirements.
All students will undertake a major in-depth study on a topic of their relevant choice subject to their degree.
ACCREDITATION
This degree is professionally accredited and gives significant exemptions from the examination schemes of the following professional bodies: The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Association of International Accountants (AIA) and the Institution of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW).
The high standing of this programme is evidenced by strong support from professional bodies and firms who donate prestigious prizes for outstanding work and also contribute to teaching on the programme with high-profile guest lectures.
CAREERS
Employment prospects are good and many graduates take up training contracts with professional accountancy firms. Graduates are working for PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, Ernst and Young, Deloitte, Procter and Gamble and VATEch-Reyrolle. Other graduates are employed in industry, commerce, local authorities and hospitals.
Graduates usually go on to complete a professional accountancy qualification and find the exemptions they get from the programme particularly valuable.
