Business and LawLaw and NBS Building, City Campus East
This fast-track programme is aimed at students with appropriate prior learning who want to understand the theoretical basis behind accounting and finance. It aims to provide students with the knowledge to enable you to compete in the increasingly globalised economy and boost your employment prospects via a thorough understanding of:
- Contemporary Corporate Recording
- International Finance
- Business Strategy
- Management Accounting
You can also choose from a number of options, e.g. Social Accounting, Risk Analysis and Derivative Products and Applications.
It’s important that applicants already have significant technical skills in financial reporting. The programme has been designed to enable you to acquire a firm understanding of the major areas of knowledge and philosophical approaches that underpin International Financial Governance and Finance at a strategic level.
Management Accounting assumes no prerequisite knowledge beyond a thorough grounding in business and economics. Contemporary Corporate Reporting assumes prior knowledge in financial reporting. The project, which is supported by taught sessions on research methods and a project supervisor, allows you to select a topic of interest and to engage in academic research deepening and applying the theoretical knowledge gained through the taught elements of the programme. The project completes the learning experience.
LEARNING AND TEACHING METHODS
A variety of teaching and learning strategies are used including lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. Students are encouraged to develop presentation and report writing skills through case study based seminars and assessments. Learning is supported through a web peer support system and tutorials exploring studying and examination/assignment techniques.
Assessment at the end of the first semester is limited to one assignment per module to allow time for students to assimilate into the new culture of teaching and learning, often in a second language.
The assessment at the end of second semester is more rigorous. However it shouldn’t prove too daunting for students prepared to put in the work required. Modules are assessed using a mixture of examinations, coursework presentations.
CAREERS
The programme provides a flexible basis for many jobs at home and abroad, including Banking and Finance, Central and Local Government, European Institutions, Sales, Marketing, Teaching and Tourism. Many students go on to studies at postgraduate level, for example, Newcastle Business School's Masters in Global Financial Management.
