The Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences Extended Degree programme provides a foundation year which acts as an introduction to a wide range of courses, including Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

You will be introduced to the basic principles of Electrical and Electronic Engineering during this foundation year; no prior knowledge will be assumed. As your fellow students will be from a range of backgrounds, everyone will be starting at the same level. You will study six modules, which will include a range of practical workshops and lectures. This will enable you to develop the skills and knowledge that you need to enter the three-year full-time degree programme, outlined below.

If you're looking to choose a course that’s going to give you skills that are in high demand both locally and internationally, look no further than Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Recent innovation in technologies such as smart phones, tablet computers, electric vehicles, solar panels and MRI scanners help to improve people’s quality of life and have been driven by electrical engineers. As a graduate from this course, you will be well-placed to work in such exciting areas as you’ll be able to:

  • design electrical/electronic circuits to a given specification
  • investigate electrical/electronic circuits by testing and taking measurements
  • quantitatively analyse your results and measurements
  • use industry standard software tools for design, simulation and development
  • perform research and exercise engineering judgement
  • create solutions to electrical and electronic engineering problems
  • plan and cost an electrical and electronic engineering project

This programme provides you with an integrated approach to electrical and electronic engineering and combines academic rigour, engineering design applications, marketing and business skills to prepare you for a range of exciting careers.

The structure of the programme gives you the opportunity for industrial experience and specialisation in the final year. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the placement option as it emphasises the relevance of the programme, increases confidence and enhances employment prospects.


LEARNING AND TEACHING METHODS

Independent learning skills are a critical aspect of the degree, enabling graduates to pick up new skills throughout their careers.  The programme is delivered through a range of lectures, seminars and practical workshops as well as guided independent study.   Throughout the programme the student’s ownership for their own learning increases, this culminates in identifying an area to study for a final year project which is the capstone of the degree and allows the development of a key area of interest which develops practical and academic skills which significantly enhance employment prospects. 

This final year project is supervised on a one to one basis.


ASSESSMENT METHODS

The assessment strategy is carefully designed to support learning and to meet the diverse needs of students. 

You'll be assessed through coursework, laboratory work and examinations and will need to complete a project and dissertation in an area of special interest to you in your final year.


ACCREDITATION

This programme is Chartered Engineer (CEng) accredited. It fulfils the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer when presented with an accredited MSc or equivalent further learning. In addition, the programme meets the educational requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer.


CAREERS

Your career prospects as a graduate from this course will be excellent. The skills of an Electrical and Electronic Engineer are currently highly valued and in demand. Many of our graduates have been able to select from a number of job offers which have sometimes followed on from their placement or project. Typical employment sectors include consumer electronics, power and renewable energy, software, telecommunications, healthcare and defence. 

An annual Employer's Fair takes place in the autumn term for students from all Engineering and Environment disciplines, providing the opportunity to meet a wide range of employers and explore placement and graduate employment opportunities. This is an invaluable networking opportunity and consistently receives excellent feedback from both students and employers who are impressed with the students they meet.
