COURSE INFORMATION (2013 ENTRY)
3 years full-time or 4 years sandwich
Engineering and EnvironmentPandon Building, Newcastle City Campus
This programme provides focused education in the practice and theory of computers and computer data networks.
The programme offers state-of-the-art workshops and laboratories equipped with the latest industry standard technology including, dedicated networking labs that emulate the Internet using Cisco equipment, network sensor development environments that allow us to study “the Internet of Things”, as well as a dedicated, networked smart home environment. You will study a range of software and hardware based subjects that have been chosen to compliment the industrial requirements of a Network Engineer.
LEARNING AND TEACHING METHODS
To ensure the practical nature of the course, it is heavily weighted toward seminars and practical workshops with lecture content at a minimum.
Throughout the programme your ownership of your own learning increases, culminating in identifying a specialist area to study for your final year project, on which you will receive one-to-one supervision. This will develop your practical and academic skills and significantly enhance your employment prospects.
ASSESSMENT METHODS
Assessments are carefully designed to ensure all students have gained a thorough understanding of their areas of study. The course is aligned with the Cisco Certified Network Associate industrial qualification and the Networks modules make use of Cisco certified practical examinations.
Other subjects are assessed in a variety of ways and, where possible, are based around a practical activity and include coursework and project reports. Where practical-based assessment is not possible we make use of both multiple choice question tests and standard examinations.
CAREERS
The UK is currently suffering from an IT skills shortage as demand for employees is outstripping supply, according to the E-skills UK and industry staffing monitor. This course will prepare and qualify students to fill this demand and take up rewarding careers in a variety of IT-based industries or as IT professionals in the service sector.
An annual Employer's Fair takes place in the autumn term for students from all Engineering and Environment disciplines, providing the opportunity to meet a wide range of employers and explore placement and graduate employment opportunities. This is an invaluable networking opportunity and consistently receives excellent feedback from both students and employers who are impressed with the students they meet. The programme has an excellent track record of students gaining employment on graduation in companies such as Microsoft, Waterstons Consultants, Andromeda Telematics and many more.
