4 years sandwich

School of Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences
Ellison Building, Newcastle City Campus

This programme offers a professional education in computing, equipping students with the skills and knowledge of techniques used in business and industrial systems development. The programme follows the same structure in the first year, at which point the structure changes, allowing students to specialise in their chosen subject area.

The third year can be spent working in industry, normally in the UK. Placements can also be arranged overseas.

This degree provides the opportunity to tailor studies to the interests and aspirations of the individual. Students study all the common subjects, and then select option modules from other programmes.

Students on the course enjoy state-of-the-art workshops and laboratories equipped with the latest industry standard technology and are currently benefitting from the enhanced facilities provided in a £8 million major refurbishment programme.

COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT

Each module of study is assessed by coursework assignments, end-of-module examinations or a combination of these. All modules have some elements of practical work, much of which makes use of computer systems. The final year project may or may not be initiated by work during placement, but does not formally commence until the second semester. It consists of an end product and a report explaining and evaluating the project process.

ACCREDITATION

Honours graduates will be fully exempt from BCS professional qualifications and will partially meet the requirements for CEng.

CAREERS

All types of computing careers will be open to graduates of these programmes, including work as programmers, systems analysts, software engineers, system implementers, database administrators, and network managers.

Career prospects are excellent. Graduates may be involved in implementing web solutions to business problems, seeking out and applying new technologies to existing internet systems, or managing increasingly sophisticated internet services.
Graduates can expect to obtain employment in programming, systems analysis and design, software engineering, and careers in multimedia design in a wide variety of organisations.
