This degree is for those aiming to become professional designers of mass-produced products, moving on to influential positions in the organisations that will shape the future. It has a very strong vocational bias fostered by its close links with industry as we believe that this is the key to developing the commercial awareness necessary to ‘hit the ground running’ when you graduate and to have an immediate impact in your chosen field. To this end we involve students in ‘live projects’ with a variety of companies during their four years with us. Most recently students have worked with multinationals such as Unilver, Diagio, Philips, Masterfoods and Glen Dimplex and leading consultancies such as Kinnear Dufort and Matter to name but a few.

Placements also play a vital role in developing ‘real world’ skills and we are able to offer two opportunities to work for three months at a time with leading companies around the world including; Therefore Ltd, Electrolux Outdoor Products Ltd, DCA Design International, Rip Curl, Puma, Lowe Alpine, GMC Design, Saloman, Early Learning Centre Hong Kong Ltd, Hasbro and Lego.

The programme encourages creative and intellectual development as well as the acquisition of technical skills, abilities and knowledge. It may be possible to follow pathways in either Performance Products or Interface Interaction Design.

A good gauge of the success of any design programme is in its achievements in competitions. The Royal Society of Arts (RSA) Annual Student Design Awards Bursary Competition is probably the widest ranging and in terms of the range of design briefs set, the most intensive. In recent years, the programme has enjoyed much success in this and other competitions including the Ceramics for Breakfast competition sponsored by Macef Milano and the Fondazione Fiera Milano. Prizes have included attachments and travel scholarships to Europe, the USA and Japan.
