3 years full-time or 4 years sandwich

School of the Built and Natural Environment
Ellison Building, Newcastle City Campus

A degree in Quantity Surveying provides a very broad range of skills which are transferable across many diverse industries.

Clearly, the predominant focus is on the construction industry where a Quantity Surveyor develops distinctive expertise in measurement, cost management, construction economics and legal matters. However, many of these skills are valuable to other sectors and many Quantity Surveyors branch out into other industries during their careers.

There are excellent opportunities in private practise, with contractors, the public sector, property developers as well as accountants, insurance and management consultancy. In these organisations work can vary enormously in type and value and this demonstrates the valuable core skills and abilities this vocational degree will provide and develop.

In Year 1, studies concentrate on the principles of knowledge on which quantity surveying is based. During this year, students undertake a UK-based residential field study visit.

Year 2 concentrates on the role of the Quantity Surveyor in practice. More detailed consideration to the knowledge base required is provided through the development of legal, technical, economic and managerial knowledge.

Year 2 prepares students for work in the optional placement year. Students are strongly encouraged to select the placement year. Recent students have worked for a variety of UK and international organisations.

In Final Year the broader role of the Quantity Surveyor is investigated while further developing academic skills including critical analysis, research and problem-solving.

Students also undertake a European-based residential study visit.
