Going to University from Care
Northumbria University is proud of its work in widening participation of young people and adults to university, and to further demonstrate its commitment to this vital area of work, we are pleased to announce that we have been successful in being awarded the Buttle UK Quality Mark for Care Leavers in Higher Education. This mark was created to recognise institutions who go that extra mile to support students who have been in public care.
What is Buttle UK?
Founded in 1937, and operational since 1953, Buttle UK is the largest UK charity providing grant aid solely to individual children and young people in desperate need. Each year Buttle UK helps many thousands of vulnerable children, young people and families throughout the United Kingdom. The people it helps are often in particularly difficult circumstances and may be experiencing severe deprivation. They may be estranged from their family, seriously ill, or experiencing a range of other social problems. Buttle UK provides support through grant aid schemes, and each year provides thousands of these grants to some of the most vulnerable children in the UK, often when there is no other source of help available to them.
What does this mean for me?
The principles of respect for individual potential; respect for individual dignity; diversity and fairness; and accessibility and approachability are at the cornerstone of the University’s Admissions Policy, ensuring all candidates have an equal opportunity to secure a place at Northumbria.
If you are in care, you will be given appropriate information about the full range of widening participation and aspiration raising activity available at the University, and given opportunities to attend these events.

- An enhanced Scholarship for care leavers
- Welcome Week tickets for the Students’ Union at 50% of the normal price
