Study Part-time - Case Study

Studying part-time is a great way to gain a new qualification while working around your family life or work commitments. While it may be daunting, it can also be extremely rewarding and provide you with the skills and confidence to achieve your personal and professional goals alongside like-minded people. If you're apprehensive about applying for a degree course because you don't have the right qualifications to go to university, you can study a Higher Education Foundation Course (HEFC), which can act as a gateway to Higher Education.

This was the case for Naomi Harling who studied a Qualitative Methods HEFC and is now a PGCE Post Compulsory Education and Training graduate.

We spoke to Naomi to gain an insight in to what you can expect while studying a HEFC at Northumbria University:

Naomi HarlingWhat advice would you give to anyone thinking of applying to do a HEFC?
To just do it! As a mature student, with a large family, I questioned myself on whether I would have the confidence or the capability to actually study for a degree. Although I had completed short courses in the past, I did not think I would have the academic and professional skills to do well, but then decided I should just try and give it a go.

I studied Qualitative Methods (Maths) HEFC, as Maths was a weak subject of mine at school, and it was a subject I was not very confident in. I needed Maths to progress in my future teaching career and was thrilled to pass my Qualitative Methods HEFC with a distinction!

What did you find most challenging about being in a higher education environment?
The most challenging thing for me was juggling my family-life, work and study. I knew that in order to succeed I would have to be disciplined and set time aside in order to keep up with my studies. It was certainly worth the time and the effort that I put in, as I am now reaping the benefits of my hard work and dedication. I believe my degree, and my teaching qualification has enabled me to take my business forward and achieve what I have so far. I wish to continue my education with a Masters degree next year.

Can you tell us a little more about your business?
My business is called 'Chill Out Time Childcare' and I am the sole owner. I started it ten years ago and have gradually expanded so that now we provide out of school care services throughout the City of Newcastle upon Tyne. The most recent expansion has been the opening of the City Crèche at The City Library in September 2011.

Finally, is there anything else you would like to say about your time at Northumbria?
Attending Northumbria was hard work, yet I have a wealth of achievement from my time there. I look at what I have achieved now, and have no regrets. I made some great friends, and had some good laughs as well as the blood, sweat and tears! I had some fantastic tutors that inspired me and believed in what I thought and did.

I have always been passionate about my work with children. With my degree and my teaching certificate, I feel that I am at an advantage to take my work further at a professional level, and shout about the importance of children's play.
