Private Accommodation

Students who prefer to find their own accommodation in Newcastle will find that there is plenty on offer. Most second, third and fourth year students live in non-university properties, furnished flats or houses, ranging in size from 2 to 6 bedrooms. Single flats and unfurnished properties are less frequently available.

Accomodation 5222.jpgNewcastle has had a surplus of private rented accommodation for many years. Landlords and agents start to advertise in November and will continue to do so until next September. They will hope to sign you up for a joint twelve month contract - this means you are committed and responsible for rent even if you change your mind.

Students who look later and negotiate with landlords have been able, in the last few years, to save money on rent levels, length of contract and even equipment provided. So, even if you decide to look early it is worth asking the question.

We allow distribution in our residences in November of Student Housing magazine which carries adverts for landlords and agents and our messages to you. Read the articles, check our website and come to see us in the Accommodation Office (1 Ellison Terrace) if you need advice or want us to check your contract before you sign it. We run drop-in sessions from 3.00pm-4.00pm every weekday during term time and you can make appointments to see us at other times, either phone 0191 227 4209 or email rc.accommodation@northumbria.ac.uk.

Landlords and agents listed by us are encouraged to join the Shared Housing Accreditation Scheme (opens an external web page) for smaller properties (4 students or less) and must have all larger properties (5 students or more, on 3 or more floors) licensed as Homes in Multiple Occupation. (opens an external web page).

Shelter's Get Advice pages for students are packed full of useful information for students. (opens an external web page)
