The University offers a variety of English language courses for both those students preparing to study on a full-time academic programme (ELAN) and also to those students who require extra support during their period of study. International students can obtain help with English from Northumbria Language Centre, which runs a guidance and tuition service specifically targeted to their needs (ASk).The University's English language requirements for most academic courses are listed below. For most courses we would require you to have an IELTS, TOEFL or Pearson test result, - or if you have taken another type of English test, this may also be taken into consideration. Please check with the International Office for details.

Minimum component scores for degree level and above courses
IELTS Minimum score in each individual element is 5.5
Pearson Test of English Academic Minimum score in each individual element is 51
TOEFL (IBT) R18, W17, L17, S20
Exceptions include :
School of Life Sciences: No individual IELTS element more than 0.5 lower than the overall score for Final Year Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses
BPTC: IELTS 7.5 in all elements
Minimum component scores for below degree level courses
IELTS Minimum score in each individual element is 4.0
Pearson Test of English Academic Minimum score in each individual element is 36
TOEFL (IBT) R4, W13, L9, S16
