Northumbria continues to strengthen its Sri Lankan ties
Northumbria University has always had strong links with Sri Lanka and is perennially popular with Sri Lankan students. A recent visit by Joanne Purves, Director of the University’s International Office, further developed this relationship when she attended a number of high profile VIP events. These included the Sri Lankan launch of new law programmes and the signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sri Lanka’s prestigious Institute of Personnel Management.![]() |
Northumbria’s LLB (Hons) and LLM law programmes were officially launched to
the Sri Lankan market in front of Sri Lanka’s Chief Justice, Attorney
General and Solicitor General. The event was set up by BMS,
Northumbria University’s Regional Centre for Sri Lanka and the
Maldives. It was packed with senior judges, lawyers and the Sri
Lankan national press who were very excited about the prospect of having
affordable legal tuition available for Sri Lankan nationals.
Speaking at the impressive launch the Chief Justice said:
“...I am happy to be present at this event where I note that the School
of Law of Northumbria University has strong reputation for its practical
Law programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It is noteworthy
that the affordability of British Degree is taken into consideration in
offering LLB (Hons) Degree for Sri Lankan students. The students have the
option of studying new legal areas such as European Union Law which will
give them an opportunity for international careers apart from practicing
law locally. I am very much impressed with the Masters Degree programme
which can be studied by distance learning method with direct contact with
the university."
As part of the same trip Joanne Purves also met with the Institute of
Personnel Management in Sri Lanka (IPMSL) and signed a MOU with its
President Mr Lalith Wijetunge. This centred on developing
collaborative activities and degree pathways with advanced entry for IPM
qualifications in human resource management at Northumbria’s Newcastle
Business School.
Commenting on the trip Joanne Purves said:
“It was great to be visiting Sri Lanka, a country where
Northumbria University is so well known. I was able to meet some of
our many Sri Lankan students, their parents and also to launch BMS as our Regional Centre for Sri Lanka
and the Maldives. BMS have done a fantastic job of setting up these
events which follow on from the recent signing of MOU’s to deliver
Northumbria leadership and management programmes in Sri Lanka in March
2009”
