Newcastle named as Britain's greenest city
Newcastle upon Tyne has been named as Britain's greenest city in a think tank's annual study. Newcastle topped the environmental rankings, which included measures on air quality, wildlife and residents' ecological footprint. It also performed well in quality of life measures such as life expectancy and education, plus its planning for the future.![]() |
Northumbria aims to enhance the quality of the environment and provide
leadership in meeting the challenges of global sustainability. This is
supported by the University’s environmental strategy objectives which aim
to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through responsible energy sourcing,
minimising demand and maximising efficiency of energy consumed.
City Campus East is the first major development which fully embodies these
principles, which have been embedded in the buildings’ concepts, design and
construction. Sustainability is governing the operating systems, principles
and procedures of the buildings. City Campus East won a national award for
being the ‘Low Carbon New Build of the Year’ in February 2008. The Low
Carbon Performance Awards are given by the Chartered Institute of Building
Service Engineers, in association with the energy supplier E.ON, to
recognise and celebrate proven achievements in delivering carbon savings in
buildings.
