First ever 'BALTIC Artist Teacher Award' presented to Northumbria student

A Northumbria Fine Art and Education student wowed the judging panel with her debut film ‘To Be Continued’

Grandma Chad

Lisa, a current part-time MA Fine Art and Education student and college lecturer created a film that re-visited poignant childhood memories of family outings and holidays together. Lisa filmed the reaction of family members going through an old box of photographs, some of which hadn’t been seen in over thirty years.

The raw emotion and use of photography caught the eye of judging panel, which included BALTIC Director, Godfrey Worsdale.

The Artist Teacher Scheme (ATS) is an expanding programme of continuing professional development. The courses are devised in partnership with galleries or museums and University Schools of fine art and design. It enables teachers to regain or develop their personal practice as artists in the context of contemporary visual arts.

ATS courses in the North East are devised and delivered by the partnership between BALTIC and MA Fine Art and Education at Northumbria University, within the School of Arts & Social Sciences. As part of this scheme students were given the opportunity to submit work for a special exhibition at the BALTIC, a prestigious gallery on the banks of the River Tyne. The judging panel selected a winner for the BALTIC Artist Teacher Award from the exhibition.

Lisa said “I was astonished to find out that I had won, I really enjoyed working on the project as I had the chance to look back into my own family history which was really interesting and I’m delighted I had the opportunity to display my work at the BALTIC.”

Lisa achievements are living proof that artists who go on to careers in education can still continue to develop their creative portfolio and exhibit at high profile galleries.
