School of Built Environment enjoys success in Economic Challange Investment bid

Northumbria University is pleased to announce that the School of the Built Environment has secured funding to provide fully sponsored places on some of its programmes, from September 2009.

The Government’s Economic Challenge Investment Fund has been established to support higher education institutions and businesses by offering support and career development to industries which have been affected by the recession.

Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Development in the Built Environment
Taken from our MSc Sustainable Development programme, this is a year-long course which is delivered by part-time study requiring one day of attendance at the University and associated independent study. This programme has been designed specifically for the property and construction professions in order to develop skills and enhance knowledge to meet the requirements of increasing government and clients’ expectations in respect of sustainable development.
It is aimed at graduates from any discipline seeking to extend their skills and utilise the possible opportunity arising from a downturn in workload. A requirement of the sponsorship is that the funding is elsewhere matched and in this respect, continued employment and employer support will suffice. We would be pleased to engage with employers in anyway which would assist in further development of this initiative.

Postgraduate Diploma in Project Management in the Built Environment
This is a yearlong full-time programme which is aimed at those seeking to continue their career development at a time of reduced graduate employment opportunity. As part of this programme offer, students are required to obtain a part-time internship which will require regular workplace activity. The School will work with companies in identifying relevant employment and will oversee the development of a portfolio of work experience as part of a personal development plan.

Following the completion of the funded Postgraduate Diploma, students will have the opportunity to apply for an MSc in Project Management, which will require completion of a Masters’ dissertation.

MEng Building Services Engineering
This is a yearlong full-time programme aimed at BEng Building Services Engineering graduates, wishing to join Level 7. Funding is available for one year only for those students without fee sponsorship.
The content of the Level 7 programme has been designed to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge needed for Chartered Engineer status.
Advanced building modelling, critical design analysis and design appraisal, business management, sustainability policies and practices, research methods and a dissertation form the content of the programme at this stage.

Sponsored places on all three initiatives are limited, and will be considered through the normal selection process. If you are interested in exploring further, please contact Katy Parles, Senior Administrator katy.parles@northumbria.ac.uk.
