Election Fever
As Election fever sweeps across the UK, Northumbria Students’ Union have been there and done that and are proud to be celebrating their newly elected officers.![]() |
As ever, the annual Students' Union Officer elections took place in March
and this year saw another increase in voting turnout. With students
becoming savvier on what their rights are and what they should be getting
from their University experience, the election candidates had to be on top
of their game with their manifestos and of course their campaign trail!
With the Students’ Union Constitution changing in recent years, the
positions up for election were:
President
Vice President Academic Affairs
Vice President Activities and Development
Vice President Communication and Involvement
Vice President Welfare and Equality
Lay Student Councillor (x5 positions)
The Quad, as ever was filled with electioneering paraphernalia from
balloons to posters, to twister boards, to space hoppers and of course the
ever present edible ‘voting incentives’ which, as usual won more than one
or two votes.
All this aside, at the heart of each campaign were well thought out
measured manifestos, that didn’t promise the earth, but what was realistic
and a benefit to all students.
Voting lasted the normal 3 days with votes being cast online. The virtual
ballot boxes closed on Thursday 25th March and the results party started.
Each position was hotly contested and victors were as follows:
President
Adam
White
Vice President Academic Affairs
Adam Wigley
Vice President Activities and Development
Becky Warburton - (re-elected)
Vice President Communication and Involvement
Holly Seabrook
Vice President Welfare and Equality
Pete Woodward - (re-elected)
Lay Student Councillor (x5 positions)
Rachel Smith
Hannah Horne
David Walton
Andrew Cheung
Kat Finn
So July will see these newly elected officers take up post with ideas on
how to make Northumbria Students’ Union an organisation that can best
represent all students at the University. A task that many have taken on
before them and the reason why Northumbria University Students’ Union keeps
getting better and better and is recognised across the UK as top
class.
