JCI has the Northumbria Alumni Connection

Regional young leaders’ networking group Junior Chamber International (JCI) North East have just appointed a new President and again it is a Northumbria University graduate.

Sally Kevan graduated from Northumbria’s Joint Honours in Childhood Studies and Professional Practice in 2003. She is currently working full time as the marketing and events manager for the regional branch of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Before this she worked on a freelance basis specialising in forging links with businesses, young people and the education sector, including a stint as a volunteer recruitment manager for Young Enterprise North East.

Sally said; “I am thrilled to have been elected for presidency of the JCI North East. The North East is a thriving region, full of economic prosperity, and there are so many choices for young people to make a successful career here. The JCI North East can be the springboard to ensure they make the most of these opportunities.”

Sally was voted in by committee members in January and will be responsible for increasing JCI membership as well as organising a number of creative networking events throughout the year.  She took over the position of JCI President from Phil Dean a partner in law firm Mincoff Jacksons.

Phil graduated from Northumbria with a degree in Law in 1992 and after a period working abroad as a holiday rep he returned to the North East to qualify as a solicitor and is now a Commercial Property Partner at Mincoff Jacksons. During his two-year term, membership levels increased significantly and now JCI North East is the largest group of Junior Chamber International in the UK.

Phil told us: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as JCI North East president and my contacts book has grown immensely in that time.  I’m sure the JCI will continue to grow strong under the direction of Sally; she is very talented, creative and is a seriously good networker. She has all the qualities to help the region develop its young talent from every sector.”

JCI North East is an independent organisation connecting people in their 20s and 30s through personal and professional development events held in the North East.

Event highlights from last year include a black tie Casino Royale evening, a ladies-only leadership in business event and this year has already kicked off with an inspiring ‘Be World Class’ event hosted by swimmer and double Olympic  medal winner Chris Cook (who is also a Northumbria Graduate).  Sally explains, “If you haven't been to a JCI event before, you will see that attendees come from all walks of life.  It's an easy chance to meet new people informally without the pressure of having to ‘network’ but, more importantly, have fun.”

But the Northumbria connection with JCI North East doesn’t just end with the presidency. The University’s Alumni Association is partnering with JCI on a number of events to offer professional networking opportunities for North East graduates in their 20s and 30s. This partnership will allow Northumbria Graduates to attend selected events in the North East Region.

Future events that the JCI committee plan to run this year include a coffee and cake networking afternoon, another night at the Casino and a Christmas pub games night.
