Learning through work pays dividends

A Northumbria University student has won the regional Learndirect Learning through Work Award.

Laura Douglas, 30, of Blyth, works as a police sergeant but is also studying for a BA (Hons) Public Service Management within the School of Arts & Socials Sciences.

Laura, who is based in North Shields, is studying by distance learning and is set to graduate this December. She said: “The Degree has definitely helped me in my current role. I now have a better understanding of politics and, in turn, a wider knowledge of the public sector in which I work. I’ve been able to transfer my new skills into my workplace and I’ve definitely grown in confidence.’’
Laura’s award recognises those individuals who have used Learning through Work to develop themselves and the business they work for. On receiving the award Laura said, “It’s all about getting the best out of yourself. Public services are all moving on, and I wanted to know about the policy changes. My course has definitely helped in my job.”

The Learndirect Achievement Awards celebrate learners and businesses who are going that extra mile to learn new skills and improve their qualifications.  

Laura will now go through to the national award ceremony in London on 19 October.

The School of Arts & Social Sciences offer a number of part-time and distance learning programmes, which can benefit individuals working within an business or organisation.  Many students enrolling on these programmes are doing so to broaden their own professional development.
