Northumbria University- a Virtual View
Have you ever wondered what the university looks like now and how it has changed since you graduated? Now you can find out, without even having to leave your computer!![]() |
Andrew Coffer, one of the placement students involved, decided to set up the virtual views after being inundated with requests from prospective students wanting to have a tour around the campus. “We often get prospective students asking to see specific buildings and rooms when they attend campus tours. During semester time many of the rooms, facilities and equipment are in constant use so we can’t always show visitors everything they would like to see. This then gave us the idea to create the online images.”
Andrew and fellow placement student Declan Clark, started to work on the project as part of the year-long placement from the Business with Marketing degree. They felt that it would be a really valuable resource for prospective students Declan told us; “By creating the panoramic views, students can go onto the website and view buildings and facilities that they might not normally get the chance to see on the campus tour. We feel that this could help prospective students make a more informed decision when applying to Northumbria”.
Declan and Andrew have completed the online project with the help of Steve Wall, a member of staff from the University’s Student Recruitment team. Steve, who has assisted the students in using the software and getting the images uploaded and online said: “It’s been a great opportunity to work with some state-of-the art software. We can really see prospective students getting a lot from it, along with our graduates who fancy taking a look at Northumbria as it is now.”
The use of Photosynth, the software used to create the images, has caught the attention of its creators, Microsoft. After viewing the images on line, they contacted the University to congratulate them on their excellent use of the software and to discuss their experiences in creating the on line service.
