Professor Mima Cattan - 13 April 2010
Academic, School of Health, Community & Education Studies'I never thought it would be like this' – journey into old age
The world is witnessing an unprecedented demographic change, with more older people in the world than ever before. At the same time an all pervading youth culture, particularly in Western societies, has led to the widespread characterisation of old age as a ‘problem’,
In her lecture Professor Cattan will explore the experiences of growing old through the eyes of older people. In particular she will focus on the experience of social isolation and loneliness in later life, and discuss how these experiences reflect society’s attitudes to older people. Finally, she will consider the development of both policy and practical solutions which can promote and sustain well-being in later life.
Mima Cattan is Professor in Public Health (Knowledge Translation) in the School of Health, Community and Education Studies. Before joining Northumbria University in 2009 she was Reader in Health Promotion (Healthy Ageing) and Co-Director of the Centre for Health Promotion Research at Leeds Metropolitan University. She is also an Associate Editor of the international journal Ageing & Society.
