The subject area received a student satisfaction score of 93% in the National Student Survey 2010, making it the highest performing Architecture programme in the country.
Peter Beacock, Director of Architecture in the School of the Built and Natural Environment, said: “Our architecture programmes are very popular with students who benefit from our excellent studio facilities and the student-centred approach taken by staff. We are pleased that our continuous efforts to improve and develop our programmes and teaching environment have been reflected in the responses received from our satisfied students.
“The architecture teaching programme is centred on design projects based on engagement with the region, which gives students a sense of authenticity and relevance.”
Northumbria University, as a whole, recorded an overall improvement in the National Student Survey 2010: 82% of final year students in 2010 expressed overall satisfaction with the quality of their course, compared to 80% in 2009.
There were also particularly strong performances in European Languages, Education Studies, Law, Initial Teacher Training, Mathematical Sciences, Sociology, Social Policy & Anthropology and Nursing – all of which met or exceeded 90% overall satisfaction.
Professor Andrew Wathey, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Northumbria University, said: "One of the principal objectives of the University’s Strategy is to achieve and sustain an overall satisfaction level of 90% in all subject areas. I am encouraged that in a range of disciplines this is already the case. Learning and teaching at Northumbria is informed by research and, where relevant, by professional practice; it is supported by excellent facilities, and experienced by over 18,000 students from the North East, more than in any other University, it makes a major contribution to our City and Region. We greatly value the National Student Survey feedback, and the University also welcomes the fact that an especially high proportion of final-year students – 77% – took the time to respond."
