Don’t can the can

A Northumbria University student has come up with a novel idea to re-use tin cans.

Instead of throwing away your old baked beans tin, 3D Design student Jack Bresnahan is urging people to re-use them by turning them into functional, everyday objects.

Jack, 22, who is originally from Kent but now lives in Heaton, Newcastle, has made a number of lids from biodegradable plastic. These convert the cans into items as diverse as a soap dispenser, a sugar pourer, a vase and a desk tidy.

Jack said: “I definitely think things should be designed to be re-used. Overall, concentration should be given to a product’s life from birth to death and designers should take responsibility for their products when they eventually need to be disposed of’.’’

Jack’s designs are currently on display at the Reveal exhibition at the School of Design at Northumbria’s City Campus East.

Members of the public are welcome to visit the show until 26 June between 10am and 4pm.

Jack will then take his designs to the New Designers exhibition in the Business Design Centre in London which will run from 16 – 19 July.

Another “green’’ concept  on display is a chair made out of old clothes, sheets and curtains.

Mo Chen, who is from Henan in China, has named her design Colourful Roll.

“I wanted to recycle things rather than just throw them out and so I decided to use them to make a product that is both colourful and very different from the norm,’’ she said.
