Honour for South Korean Academic
A leading academic from South Korea who is playing a major role in shaping the economic future of his country has been awarded an Honorary Degree from Northumbria University.![]() |
Professor Dong-Young Jang is President of Seoul Technopark, a Director of Seoul Technopolis and a respected researcher, designer, engineer and entrepreneur.
A graduate of Seoul National University, he went on to study for a Masters Degree in Machine Design which took him into the research arena. To further his knowledge he moved to America where he studied for a Doctorate and quickly became a Research Professor.
During the six years he spent in America he successfully bid for $1.33million of funding, published widely in international journals and presented his findings at 17 conferences.
In 1997, Professor Jang returned to South Korea where he worked as a Professor in Seoul National University and continued his research. An application for funding to develop a graduate programme brought him into contact with Northumbria University. The BSc (Hons) Manufacturing Systems and Design Engineering programme was established which is validated and awarded by Northumbria University and delivered in South Korea using the English language. The first of its kind, the programme was designed to meet the needs of industry and is viewed as an exemplar by the Korean Ministry of Education.
As President of Seoul Technopark, Professor Jang is an advocate of integrating industry and academia. The Technopark has more than 50 hi-tech companies on campus with students working closely with industry and companies benefitting from joint research.
In addition to his responsibilities, Professor Jang still finds time to teach and carry out research. He has published a further 16 papers and presented his research at another nine conferences since his return to Seoul in 1997.
