Wall Street Smash: Premium Service for Finance Students

Northumbria has become the first UK university north of London to install Bloomberg Financial Services Terminals for its business school students, staff and clients to use.

So far more than 300 undergraduate and postgraduate students have received training in how to use the Bloomberg professional service, which provides real-time and historical financial news and information aiding those within the financial services industries to trade, research and communicate with each other.

Newcastle Business School will also soon introduce short evening and weekend courses on finance and financial markets, which will incorporate the Bloomberg Certification and use of the terminals.

Time to recognise long service

More than 100 members of staff who have notched up over 2,330 years service have received long service awards.

Among those was Sue Ralph, assistant administrator in the School of Design.

Sue joined the University as a clerk typist in Arts and Design with the intention of only staying for six years or so.

“My time here has absolutely flown over, I’ve really enjoyed my 20 years here. I have friends in lots of different departments. It’s a great place to work,’’ she said.

New Sports Facility is virtually here

A promotional film providing a virtual tour of the University’s new £30million sports facility, showcasing some of the main areas and services is now available to view across the campus.

The film includes a feature on the 25m, six-lane swimming pool which incorporates a floating floor, allowing the depth of the pool to be adjusted, and timing devices to allow swimmers and their coaches to monitor, measure and improve their performance.

The film then takes in one of the facility’s most unique features - a glass enclosed climbing wall projecting out over Northumberland Road which will allow passers-by to the watch climbers.

Design entrepreneur returns to Northumbria

A Northumbria graduate and design company director has returned to his former University classrooms to inspire current students and launch a new project.

Rob Law, who graduated with a First Class BA Honours Design for Industry degree in 2000, is the creator and director of Magmatic, a design company that creates travel products for children, including the popular ride-on suitcase, Trunki.

He visited the School of Design to speak about the conception and journey of Trunki and to launch a design project with second year Design for Industry students.

Memoirs of holocaust survivor are published

The latest book to be published by Northumbria Press reveals the moving story of a remarkable Czech-Jewish woman who survived Nazi Germany’s extermination camps.

Zdenka Fantlová’s book ‘The Tin Ring’ is an unforgettably moving tale of courage, love, tenacity, hope and humanity, experienced by a girl who lived through the Holocaust.  Zdenka is now in her 80s but she has never forgotten the British soldier who saved her life at Bergen-Belsen in 1945 and is hoping the publication of her memoirs will help her track him down.
