Established in 1997, SCRI has developed a strong reputation for both scholarly and policy-driven research at local, regional, national and international levels.

SCRI operates in a holistic way which focuses on the whole city. Cities are a backdrop for economic development, innovation, society and culture, but are also host to many environmental and social problems. By taking a multidisciplinary approach encompassing environment, economy, and society, SCRI seeks to inform policy and develop innovative approaches to research and problem-solving.

SCRI's research areas include sustainable development, urban regeneration, environmental policy, environmental behaviour, energy conservation, governance, and community engagement.
