Northumbria setting the wheels in motion for active travel in Newcastle
Northumbria involved in a scheme funded by Newcastle Science City through the European Regional Development Fund - bringing them together with local partners JET and Recyke Y’Bike.
The three organisations will promote active travel and independent living skills in the West End of Newcastle.
With Newcastle Science City funding, the three partners involved will combine their extensive experience to work with three groups of people over the six month project which started recently. The outcome of the project is to encourage behavioural change in areas where the people have limited confidence, or ability to cycle independently.
Byker based charity, Recyke Y’Bike is the lead partner responsible for providing cycling training to participants. They will aim to increase confidence in learning to ride a bike, route planning, cycling on busy roads and bicycle maintenance.
Newcastle charity JET (Jobs, Employment & Training) who work with BME communities across the City will play an instrumental part in the project, by enlisting participants and engaging those based in the target communities. JET will also deliver vocational ESOL training, IT training, motivational training and support and information on volunteering and employment to participants.
Northumbria University’s participation comes from the School of the Built and Natural Environment. Dr Seraphim Alvanides, Reader within the School, will be evaluating the project outcomes and Godwin Yeboah, postgraduate researcher will be assessing the cycling confidence of participants. Their combined expertise in public health, GPS systems for tracking people’s mobilities and planning cycling routes, will allow them to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the work undertaken by Recyke Y’Bike and JET.
JET is now looking for volunteers to take part in the project. If you would like to receive more information, please call 0191 273 5761. Please note that this programme is for West End residents only.
All participants who complete the scheme will receive free training for cycling and IT skills, as well as a free bike (with bike lock and helmet) and endless hours of fun!
