The BA (Hons) undergraduate degree course was established in 1997 and the Professional Diploma course began in 2006, renamed the Master of Architecture in 2009. Both courses are prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) giving exemption from Part I and Part II respectively of the RIBA's membership examinations.
We enjoy a close relationship with RIBA North East, who are based within the University. Lectures at Northumbria University for RIBA North East members and for the architecture students at Northumbria and Newcastle Universities in 2008 - 2009 included Ted Cullinan, RIBA Royal Gold Medallist 2008; Malcolm Fraser, Malcolm Fraser Architects; David Howarth of DRDH Architects; Richard Murphy, Richard Murphy Architects; Matthew Springett, Matthew Springett Associates; Wendy de Silva, Chance de Silva Architects; Chris Wilderspin, van Heyningen and Haward Architects; and John Miller, Bennetts Associates.
