Research Assessment Exercise 2008

UK universities periodically submit research output of staff to be peer reviewed so that its standard can be assessed. The results of the 2008 exercise were published in December.

In 2008, the feedback given to university departments was in the form of a profile rather than one summative measure. The feedback we received for our School of Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences was excellent and showed great progress on the previous assessment exercise.

In more detail, 5% of the work submitted was rated “world leading”, 45% “internationally excellent”; 35% “quality that is recognised internationally” and the remaining 15% “quality that is recognised nationally”.  This was one of the outstanding results in the University, but there was generally good news across all of the University submissions.

The Dean of the School, Professor Alistair Sambell was delighted with this excellent news and offered "... congratulations to all involved, the results representing many years of dedicated commitment to research along with much hard work in writing our submission. This was an outstanding result and reflects the growing reputation of the School.  The research activity undertaken by staff directly influences the teaching, especially at postgraduate level and for example in final year degree projects.”

Further information about the research we do in the School can be found by following our research link. More information on the RAE 2008 results can be found at the RAE2008 website.
