ITMB students highly commended

Students on the BSc (Hons) Information Technology Management for Business (ITMB) degree from Northumbria University were awarded a cash prize for their efforts at the annual ITMB student conference, held in November.

The Northumbria team of second year ITMB students presented ideas that supported the IBM smarter planet initiative and were ‘highly commended’.  The organisers had originally planned to award only a first place prize, but were so impressed with the team’s idea and presentation style that they created an extra prize.  In addition, Francis Hall was awarded a spot prize by IBM for his excellent leadership of the team and his drive and enthusiasm for the team’s smarter planet idea.

ITMB was created by e-skills UK along with the support of over 60 employers from top businesses in response to demand for IT graduates with both a solid grasp of technology and the business-related and interpersonal skills to work effectively in project teams and client-facing roles.

Over 300 students from 14 universities across England and Wales and 56 employers made the trip to Manchester for the 9th annual ITMB student event.  The companies included IBM, HP, Procter & Gamble, Deloitte, Credit Suisse, Shell, CapGemini, Logica and PWC.

These events are just one of the ways the ITMB programme helps students to build up their profiles and employability, and are hosted twice a year by e-skills UK.  Students are given the opportunity to network with employers from top companies, get their CVs looked at and take part in sponsored competitions for a chance to win trophies and cash prizes.

Inspirational talks from industry experts such as Jenny Taylor and Rashik Parmar (IBM), Charles Sharland (Appsense), Lynn McKee (Business & Decision) and Liz Brewer (Teach First) explored the different careers technology offers and shared their experience of hiring ITMB graduates.
