BSc Mathematics - John English
Now you are in your final year, what has been the highlight of the course for you so far?
"It is hard to identify one particular highlight of the course, it has all been very interesting and enjoyable."
How easy was it to make friends here?
"It was very easy to make friends on the course as they were all down to earth people."
What advice would you give to someone thinking of doing this course?
"Definitely do it because it will be hard to find another mathematics course with such a wide coverage in applied and statistical maths. The tutors and lecturers are very friendly, conscientious and helpful too."
What is the most interesting thing you have learned from the course?
"The most interesting thing that I have learned on this course would be a lot of the stuff investigated while studying vector calculus and fluid dynamics. For example, we learned my pig huts should always be concreted down and how much fuel you should put into a rocket in order for it to progress into outer space."
Tell us about your final year project?
"I recently completed a final year project where I was asked to try and develop a better measure of a country’s human development status to rival to currently established human development index used by the United Nations. To do this I took more of the country’s characteristics into account and compared my measure to the UN’s measure by applying two mathematical methods to it."
What are your plans after graduation?
"I have recently been offered a job to work for Glaxo Smith Kline as a statistician which I have taken."
