Dr Krishna Busawon

Subject area: Engineering

Reader in Control Systems Engineering

Director of Post-Graduate Research

Krishna Busawon

I joined the School of Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences at Northumbria University in 2000.  Prior to that, I was a Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (FIME) at the University of Nuevo León, Mexico. I was also appointed as a Research Fellow at Simon Fraser University in 1997 where I worked on a General Motors funded project dealing with the modelling of fuel injected engines for exhaust gas recirculation control purposes. I did his PhD research in Control Systems Engineering at the CNRS (Centre National de Recherches Scientifiques) research laboratory - LAGEP, (Laboratoire d’Automatique et de Génie des Procédés) at the University of Lyon, France.  Recently, I was a visiting professor at the University of Valenciennes in France and the  University of Tlemcen in Algeria.

Teaching

Before joining Northumbria University I was involved in teaching of a wide range of subjects from Mathematics to Control Systems Engineering such as:

  • Industrial Control and Instrumentation - undergrad level
  • Circuit theory – undergrad level
  • Digital signal Processing – undergrad level
  • Electronic product design – undergrad level
  • Optimal Control – master level
  • Functional Analysis – master level

Additionally, I provide post-graduate training on Mathematical modelling for PhD students.

Research

My main research interests are in control and estimation: mathematical modelling and analysis; feedback control design, digital control, observer design for linear and nonlinear systems; parameter identification; model-based fault detection and diagnosis,

with applications to:

  • power systems: flux estimation in induction machines, excitation control for synchronous generators, control of wind energy conversion system.
  • chemical and biotechnological processes: kinetic rates estimation in bioreactors, composition control and components faults diagnosis in CSTRs.
  • mechanical systems: control of flexible joint and rigid robots.
  • automotive systems: engine modelling and EGR control.
  • Communications systems: Non-uniform sampling, chaotic synchronization.
