Professor David Wainwright

Director - IMI Research Group

David W. Wainwright is a Professor in Information Systems and Director of the Information, Management Innovation (IMI) Research Group. David has held previous academic posts at both Durham University and Newcastle Business Schools lecturing on information systems strategy and organizational approaches to the adoption, implementation and diffusion of information systems innovations.

A particular research focus involves the development of innovative participative action research approaches using ‘soft’ modelling methods for developing information systems strategy and creating systems requirements definitions (process modelling) for effective information systems adoption, implementation and diffusion. This action research approach to information systems development has been used to facilitate information systems adoption and implementation both within the public (healthcare information systems and also housing trusts) and private (construction management, manufacturing and SMEs) sectors.

David is an active working party member of the international Association for Information Systems ,a fully elected Board Member (Vice President and President Elect for 2009) for the UK Academy for Information Systems , a member of the British Computer Society (BCS) and British Academy of Management (BAM) Directors of Research Network.

He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Enterprise Information Management having published over 50 internationally refereed papers and published in esteemed international journals such as: the Journal of Information Technology, the International Journal of Production Economics, the British Medical Journal, the International Journal of Production and Operations Management, and the International Journal of Information Management. David has been a Programme Chair for a series of UKAIS international Conferences (Northumbria 2005, Manchester 2007, Bournemouth 2008 and Oxford 2009), and been invited many times as a Track and Session Chair at major international IS conferences such as the International Federation for Information Processing IFIP WG.8.6 and 8.2.

Funded research contracts, grants and awards has been received from funding bodies such as the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the NHS Service Delivery Organisation and local health authority as well as university and ERDF funded projects.

David joined academia after working for 5 years as a geophysicist and drilling engineer in the oil exploration industry working all over North Africa and the Middle East. After gaining a PhD focusing on developing innovative prototyping methods for rapid development of manufacturing information systems, he joined academia leading the BIS subject area in the Newcastle Business School. He has over 15 years experience of Board level consultancy experience having developed information systems and technology strategies with Vickers Defence Systems (now BAe) and Grainger Property Ltd as well as many SMEs in the property, building and construction sectors.

David is an experienced PhD supervisor and external examiner and is currently supervising 8 PhD students. He currently acts as an External Examiner for Brunel (Information Systems and Computing) and Newcastle (Business School) Universities.
