Prof. Zabih Ghassemlooy
Associate Dean for Research
I began my academic career by studying for a degree in Electrical and Electronic engineering at Manchester Metropolitan University in 1981. I then went to UMIST to study for an MSc in 1983 before completing my PhD in Optical Communications in 1987. I then moved on to the City University in London to work as a postdoctoral research fellow for a year and then moved on to a lectureship at Sheffield city Polytechnic in 1988 and ended up staying there, with various promotions, for about 16 years. Soon after arriving in Sheffield I became a Senior Lecturer and was promoted in 1991 to Principal Lecturer and Group Leader in the School of Engineering Information Technology at, what was now, Sheffield Hallam University.
In 1995 I became a reader in Communications Engineering and Leader of the Communication Engineering Digital Signal Processing Group. In 1997 I became Professor of Optical Communications and, in 2002, Head of the Electronics Research Group. I remained in Sheffield until 2004 when I came to Northumbria University as Associate Dean for Research in the School of Engineering and Technology and since 2005, I have also been Head of Northumbria Communications Research Laboratory. In my time at Northumbria, the research within the School has increased dramatically and we currently have many students studying for PhDs. I have personally supervised 27 PhD students though I also have a keen interest in teaching and teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
