Dr James McLaughlin
Subject area: Mathematics and Statistics
Senior Lecturer
I graduated from Durham University in 2002 with a M.Sci. Mathematics and Physics (joint honours) degree. I then moved to the University of St Andrews for my Ph.D. studies in Applied Mathematics/Solar Theory. After successfully defending my thesis entitled “MHD wave propagation in the neighbourhood of magnetic null points", I accepted a research scientist position at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, USA. Later, I returned to the University of St Andrews as a Research Fellow funded by a Leverhulme Trust Grant. In late 2009, I was appointed lecturer of applied mathematics at Northumbria University.
I am primarily interested in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), specifically in the theoretical behaviour of MHD waves in inhomogeneous media, with application to the solar atmosphere. I split my time between research, undergraduate teaching and scientific outreach events.
