General
I joined Northumbria University in 1994 after a career in industry delivering and managing information, library and records management services for research and development scientists in the electronics, coatings and pharmaceutical sectors. I am currently Head of Research, Information and Communication Management.
Teaching
My primary teaching responsibilities are records management and information storage and retrieval. I have developed innovative work-based and distance learning training and education programmes for organisations such as the BBC, The National Archives and the European Central Bank. I am Programme Leader for the MSc Information & Records Management and BSc (Hons) Information & Records Management programmes, the first distance learning programmes of their type in the UK. I am currently developing a Professional Practice Awards Programme for work-based learning.
Research
My research is in records management, specifically the people, process, systems and governance aspects. I have directed AHRC, JISC and Eduserv funded projects on: managing research data and records; freedom of information and records management; the impact of ISO 15489; evaluating records management capacity/compliance toolkits; SharePoint in UK HEIs and accelerating positive change in managing electronic records (AC+erm ). AC+erm is the largest ever AHRC grant for records management research. See Information & Records Management Research.
Professional
I am an active member of the BSI and ISO Committees which developed ISO 15489, the international records management standard, and author of BIP 0025:2 (2003) on implementing the standard. From 2006-2008 I was a member of the AHRC Peer Review Panel for Librarianship, Information and Museum Studies and now a member of the AHRC Peer Review College. I acted as one of three advisors evaluating the IRMS member accreditation scheme proposals launched in 2011.
I have been an Editor of the Records Management Journal since 1996 and was acclaimed a Leading Editor in the publisher’s Literati Network 2011 Awards for Excellence. I am also on the Editorial Boards of Aslib Proceedings, J. of Documentation and J. of the Society of Archivists. I have published many articles, authored, co-authored and co-edited several books and conference proceedings, including the unique Northumbria University Records Management Witness Seminar series
