Yang Jiang - about her research interests

My current research is focused on developing intelligent digital media processing algorithms, via exploring the boundaries across computing, media, digital entertainment, artificial intelligence, and image processing. This research programme is essentially designed to bridge the gap currently existing between technology and media. As I have the background and strong experiences across both disciplines, I feel extremely confident to produce high quality research as well as developments.

At present, I have completed two major research themes and developed a range of algorithms. One is introducing a so-called one class SVM (support vector machine) to detect interactive points with computer games and add intelligence to the interaction process, and the other is to design a decision tree to extract potential interactive scenes or areas within snooker videos and extract a range of designated semantics for high level video editing and computer gaming. As a result, a number of research papers have been generated and successfully published in known conferences and journals, one of which received the best student paper award in an international conference in Singapore.

In addition, I have also completed some initial research towards facial analysis, detection and recognition inside videos, where I introduced a new concept of machine learning 3D model for capturing facial regions within different poses. Via case-based reasoning, a 3D facial model can be established by capturing the continuous sequence of faces and registering with the templates of prepared 3D models. As a result, pose detection could be eliminated from the process of face recognition without compromise on detection and recognition performances.
