What appealed to you about Northumbria University / studying in Newcastle?
I did my undergraduate studies in Northumbria University. Since then, I had been captivated by the beauty of the city and the strong commitment from the university to provide a first class educational experience. The lecturers and the staffs provide a strong support for international students whose English is not the main language. For instance, the university provides free English lessons for international students to assist them in the understanding of the lectures and tutorials.
What was it about the course / subject area that particularly appealed?
The course is simply amazing – the students are given the freedom of choice to specialise in any area according to the individual’s desire and expertise. Therefore, I decided to combine business course with IT and e-knowledge management course
How did you feel during your first week at Northumbria?
I consider Newcastle as one of the best place for studying. The city is neither too big nor too small. Despite being a cosmopolitan city, it is not overly-crowded like London, and not too quiet like Sunderland. As Newcastle is voted as the best nightlife in Europe, it is a fabulous place to chill out and socialise with friends in the local clubs and bars. Newcastle is also one of the safest cities in the UK, and everyone will undoubtedly feel welcome in this vibrant city; all credits due to the friendly citizens with their sexy “Geordy” accent, and not forgetting the great football club in St James’s Stadium!
What do you like most about the course?
This course covers a broad scope and provides me with a wider understanding of the relationship between organisation and Information Technology. The course examines the theoretical, methodological and various techniques that made up one of the main drives of a successful organisation.
Can you give an example of a piece of work you’ve been involved with recently and what it involves?
I am currently working on a consultancy project to provide creative solutions for my client. I believe this module has been intuitive and beneficial, as companies are increasingly looking to employ graduates with the practical working experiences and not just based on their academic excellence.
What are the best things about Newcastle?
During leisure time, I tend to spend most of my time hanging out with my friend watching movies and exploring the countless great bars and funky clubs. Northumbria city has been voted as “the best nightlife in UK” which it definitely lives up to its name. As the university has a wide range of international students from all around the world, it enables me to build friendship with my friends all around the world including Indonesia, New Zealand, African, China, India, Japanese, and etc. During the semester holiday, I enjoy skiing in the highlands and going for short tours in Europe.
What’s your accommodation like?
I live with my Indonesian friends in private accommodation it’s just 2 minutes walk from central station and 15 minutes walk from university. The accommodation is very comfy and the environment is very supportive for me to study.
What would you like to do when you graduate?
Upon graduation, I can see myself as a fresh graduate with variety of paths and opportunities to choose from. With the qualification and practical skills I gain from Northumbria University, obtaining employment would definitely not be of a major problem. Once I have gained relatively sufficient experience, I would like to return to my home country, as I strongly believe that the knowledge and experience here I have gained in the UK would be of great value and importance in my future endeavour in Indonesia.
How do you get on with your tutors?
All the tutors have been very supportive and are always willing to go the extra mile to provide me with any help that I need whether in terms of assignments or problems incurred in understanding some parts of the lectures. Despite their busyness, they are always willing to sacrifice their personal time to answer all my queries patiently.
