Mathematics and Information Sciences
The Department of Mathematics and Information Sciences encompasses a range of subject disciplines that reflect the growing demand for high level analytical, problem solving, information management and communication skills in innovative organisations. Mathematics centres on areas in computational mathematics, modelling, statistics and applied mathematics, and includes diverse subjects such as financial analysis, fluid dynamics and chaos theory. Information Sciences, an iSchool, centres on the disciplines of information systems, ICT, information & records management, librarianship and project management. It includes diverse subjects such as entrepreneurship, public relations, music technology and event planning. Methods for the capture, management, analysis and communication of data, information and knowledge are studied, thus developing the skills and techniques sought after by many organisations. Research in this area impacts all areas of society, from health to geography, construction management to astrophysics and from museums and libraries to government intelligence.
