What do you mean you're a lawyer? The future of legal practice after the Legal Services Act 2007
Mark Stobbs is the Director of Legal Policy at the Law Society. He was educated at Newcastle’s own Royal Grammar School and Pembroke College Oxford. Between 1985 and 1993 he worked as a civil servant in the then Lord Chancellor's Department on policy aimed towards the legal profession, including legislation governing rights of audience and the establishment of the Legal Services Ombudsman.
He joined the Bar Council in 1993 working in the complaints and standards sections and became Head of Professional Standards and Legal Services in 1998. During his time at the Bar Council, Mark reformed the Bar Council's complaints system, developed the rules relating to public access to the Bar and modernised the Code of Conduct. He was closely involved with the development of the Bar Standards Board and became the first full-time Director of the Board in July 2006. Mark joined the Law Society as Director of Policy in 2008. He is responsible for the Society’s work on all aspects of the profession’s work including legal aid and access to justice, advocacy, regulatory policy within the Society’s representative role, law reform and international work.
Mark’s Eldon Lecture will focus on the future of the legal profession in the light of the Legal Services Act and the developments in the market and how legal practice is likely to change as the profession meets the challenges posed by competition, outsourcing and new businesses entering the market. He will look at the likely developments and consider how the way in which lawyers work will change and how this may affect their responsibilities to their clients. It will be interest to all members of the legal profession as well as law students.
The lecture will commence at 6pm and will be followed by a drinks reception. This event will be accredited for 1 hour CPD by the SRA and BSB.
