Legal Professionals Join Law Students at Prestigious Dinner
Northumbria University Law School welcomed more than 170 guests to its highly anticipated Annual Bar Dinner on Thursday 30 April at the Civic Centre, Newcastle. Sponsored by Broad Chare Chambers, Parklane Plowden Chambers, Trinity Chambers and the Civic Centre’s Hospitality Services, the celebratory event marked the completion of the Bar Vocational Course for more than 100 law students.The dinner was attended by many distinguished guests including the Chairman of the Bar Desmond Browne QC, the Honourable Mrs Justice Swift, and their Honours, Judge Cartlidge, Judge Orde, Judge Prince, Judge Lancaster, Judge Milford and Judge Hannah. Also present were local barristers and representatives from the four Inns of Court – Lincoln’s Inn, Gray’s Inn, Inner Temple and Middle Temple – which students must join in order to qualify.
The evening represented an important step for the ambitious future barristers. All Bar students are required to attend twelve dinners before they can be ‘called to the Bar’ and the event counted as one of those qualifying sessions.
Deveral Capps, Director of the Bar Programmes at Northumbria University Law School, said: “the regional dinner held in Newcastle is now firmly established as one of the highlights of the legal calendar in the North East of England. I am delighted that so many students and legal professionals were able to attend the event, it was a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with some highly successful, inspirational legal experts.”
Northumbria University Law School is one of only six institutions outside of London to provide the Bar Vocational Course. The programme is well resourced, student centred and taught by barristers – many of whom practice on the circuit. As well as a full-time route, the BVC is offered on a part-time basis for busy professionals or those with family commitments.
