New Flexible E-Learning Route for the GDL

From September 2010, the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL/CPE) will be available via E-Learning reducing the attendance requirement to just one week at the beginning of year 1 and year 2, with the option to attend study days throughout the programme should students wish.

This is made possible by providing a major part of the tuition through specially designed electronic materials.  Northumbria University has invested heavily in IT and in 2006 won a major award for excellence as most IT enabled organisation. Northumbria was chosen over the competition in recognition of its functional, resilient and innovative IT infrastructure. Features of IT provision include the desktop anywhere initiative which provides web access to email, files and software from (potentially) anywhere in the world and the Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment. These initiatives provide much greater flexibility for those with work and family commitments.

The Law School has had many years of experience in delivering distance learning programmes and has introduced the Graduate Diploma in Law E-Learning route to meet the needs of such students. Students receive detailed study guides, electronic lectures and other study materials in each of the foundation subjects. The programme is 2 years in duration.

Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma in Law qualifies the student to proceed to the vocational stage of training. Students who intend to become solicitors will need to complete the Legal Practice Course (LPC) while those who intend to become barristers will need to complete the Bar Vocational Course (BVC). Both the LPC and BVC are available at Northumbria on a full and part-time basis.
