Northumbria Law School launches new Law and Environment degree
Northumbria Law School is proud to announce the launch of an innovative and exciting new undergraduate degree programme in September 2010.Available via Clearing from August 19th
The new LLB (Hons) Law and Environment programme is the
first programme of its kind in the country to provide an integrated
environmental qualifying law degree.
The programme, offered in conjunction with Northumbria's School of
Applied Sciences, will be of interest not only to those wishing
to become legal professionals but also to anyone with an
interest in working in the environmental sector.
The LLB (Hons) Law and Environment programme covers the legal knowledge subjects required for a qualifying law degree: Public Law, European Union Law, Criminal Law, Contract Law, Tort Law, Property Law and Equity and Trusts. This enables students, should they so wish, to go on to complete the Legal Practice Course or Bar Professional Training Course and qualify as a solicitor or barrister.
In addition, the programme includes modules looking at the tools and standards of environmental protection. Other modules, such as 'Environmental Rights and Responsibilities' examine the Human Rights Act 1998, the European Convention on Human Rights and UNECE Aarhus Convention and the common law torts as they relate to environmental issues. The Pollution Control module focuses on the English regulatory control of pollution including waste management, environmental permitting and the remediation of contaminated land.
The law surrounding the emerging area of carbon reduction and emissions trading schemes is also part of the programme, as is an examination of the town and country planning system and in particular how it deals with the often highly contentious issues of new nuclear power stations, airport expansions and the growth in renewable energy.
