School of Law takes on the city
Northumbria School of Law has been shortlisted for the prestigious Law Society Excellence Awards 2010 in the category of 'Excellence in Learning and Development'.
The School was shortlisted for the community work of its Student Law Office legal service where final year law students offer free advice and representation to members of the public under the supervision of qualified lawyers.
The awards scheme is the annual showcase for excellence in the legal profession and attracts a large number of applications from leading national and international law firms.
Firms shortlisted this year include Clifford Chance, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, Pinsent Masons LLP and Allen & Overy LLP.
This is the forth year of the Excellence Awards and the first time that 'Learning and Development' has appeared as a category. The Law School faces stiff competition including two big hitting law international law firms, Eversheds LLP and Linklaters LLP.
Philip Plowden, Dean of the Law School said "The Student Law Office is an inspirational learning environment that promotes in students the highest degree of professionalism and a commitment to lifelong learning while at the same time providing a vital community service. It is extremely gratifying for the University, the supervising lawyers and their dedicated students that this innovative model is recognised in the Law Society Excellence Awards."
